September 30, 2021 – New Report on Mental Health Concerns in Construction Community Released [RESOURCE]
An important new study related to mental health issues vs. the willingness to discuss such matters was released today by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
The attached summary of the report raises this matter at a time when the construction workforce is afflicted with the second highest suicide rate among major industries. Now that COVID vaccinations are readily available to all but young children, more employers are looking to encourage, and in some cases mandate, employees and their family members to get vaccinated. There is certainly flexibility for employers to do so, but employers need to be aware of certain compliance requirements that may apply depending upon what type of policy the employer implements. NAC Safety White Paper No. 48, “NAC Recognizes Known Contractors Achieving One Million Workhours with Zero OSHA Recordable Injuries” was recently released showing the firms reaching this impressive milestone according to OSHA records. (See, Safety White Paper No. 48).
July 2, 2019 - A new report, by Opportunity America, examines programs that could become eligible for federal financial aid – An Unknown Landscape: Short-Term Job-Focused College Programs. The Report’s principal finding: there is strong demand for short job-focused programs among students and employers. Educators on eight subject campuses said their offerings are meeting local labor market need but far from satisfying it, and if additional federal funding were available, more could be done to train workers for local jobs. March 6, 2019 - OSHA Rolls-out “Safe + Sound” 2019 Effort [RESOURCE]
“Safe + Sound,” OSHA's year-round campaign to encourage every workplace to have a safety and health program, includes both employers and workers. Employers are encouraged to participate in quarterly events to develop effective safety and health programs in their workplaces. Participants can learn about best practices during webinars and put them into action during the 30-day challenges. These events also focus on management leadership, worker involvement, as well as finding and fixing hazards.
